8 Ways to Honor a Service Member on Veterans’ Day

Today is Veterans’ Day, an annual federal holiday to honor all who have served in the military. If you are searching for ways to honor a service member on Veterans’ Day, check out the following list for ideas.

  1. Social Media Posts: People spend hours on their electronic devices. Use your platform to acknowledge the veterans in your life. Thank a veteran directly by posting on social media. Post your favorite veteran’s picture. (Please be careful not to give out sensitive information.)
  2. Display the Flag: If you do not already display the United States Flag, purchase one to hang outside your home. Many large name department stores carry flag installation kits.  
  3. Everyone Eats: Do you know a friend or family member who is a military veteran? Call the person with an invitation for lunch or dinner.  Cook a homemade meal for your favorite veteran. If your schedule is full, send take-out to the person’s home or purchase a gift card from your local restaurant. Gift certificates are a wonderful way to honor a veteran and support your local restaurant.
  4. Send a Note: Writing a few words of thanks in a card is a great way to honor a veteran. Turn the activity into a family event. Create the thank you cards together. Then, make a special trip to the mailbox to send the cards.
  5. Attend a Local Community Event: Many communities host parades, place small United States Flags on graves, or other events. Check with the local V.F.W. for free meals for service members being served on Veterans’ Day. For a small fee, non-service members are welcome to eat too. The money raised goes back into the organization for helping veterans.
  6. Send a Care Package: Do you have a loved one who is currently serving in the military? Create a care package with hometown favorites. Ask other friends or family members to contribute to the care package. Adding cards or notes from others makes the care package extra special.
  7. Volunteer Your Time: Numerous non-profit organizations focus on helping veterans. Consider volunteering at a homeless shelter. Or go to your local veterans’ hospital or nursing home to volunteer with a veteran who does not receive any visitors. Your time could significantly help another person.
  8. Donate: Send a monetary donation to a local VFW or other reputable organization that directly helps veterans. Since the holiday season is just around the corner, many organizations or businesses are collecting toys, personal items, and groceries to help military personnel and their families.

Celebrating Veteran’s Day

Did you know today, November 11th is Veteran’s Day? A federal holiday is more than just getting a day off from work. Veteran’s Day focuses on honoring all who have served in the United States military. Formerly known as Armistice Day, in 1938, the holiday initially was set to honor the end of World War I, which was on November 11, 1918. Moving from Armistice Day to Veteran’s Day in 1954, the holiday included U.S. Veterans from all wars.

How to Celebrate Veteran’s Day

Do you want to participate in celebrating Veteran’s Day? The day is about more than a day off from work. The holiday is about honoring those who have been in the military. The individuals who have stood for freedom during times of conflict and peace.

If you need help trying to find a way to celebrate Veteran’s Day, consider the following ideas:

  • Go Out to Dinner: Ask a Veteran out to eat. Take them to breakfast or dinner. Allow them to pick the spot. Older veterans may enjoy time out of the house.

During his time in Vietnam, they were trying to remove a tree stump from the military base. They decided to use explosives on the stump.
