Top Vegetables to Freeze for Quick Meals

The local Farmer’s Markets are already going strong. It’s the perfect time to stock up on vegetables. Freezing vegetables is a great way to save money, reduce waste, and make quick meals easier. Some veggies freeze beautifully, while others need a little prep (like blanching) to keep their texture and flavor.

Best All-Around Freezer Vegetables

The following vegetables hold up well in both taste and texture. These vegetables are perfect for soups, stir-fries, and casseroles.

  • Broccoli: Cut your broccoli into florets. Then blanch broccoli and freeze.
  • Carrots: Slice or dice your carrots to the desired size. Next blanch your carrots and freeze.
  • Green Beans: Trim off the ends of your green beans. Snap or cut to desired size. Then blanch your green beans and freeze.
  • Peas: Shell your peas. Then blanch briefly and freeze.
  • Corn: Freeze your corn either on or off the cob but blanch first.

Vegetables You Can Freeze Without Blanching

The following vegetables are super easy to prepare. Just chop and freeze. Consider freezing in smaller portions depending on the use.

  • Onions
  • Garlic
  • Bell Peppers (Great for cooking but will lose their crispness)
  • Celery

Leafy Greens

The following vegetables are best for cooking later. They do not hold their crispness to use in salads after thawing. They are best for soups or pastas. Blanch these vegetables quickly, squeese out water, and freeze in desired potions.

  • Spinach
  • Kale
  • Swiss Chard

Vegetables Best Frozen for Use in Recipes

The texture of these vegetables will change when they are frozen. Most will soften but they are still very useful for soups, sauces, casserole or baking recipes.

  • Tomatoes: Freeze your tomatoes whole or chopped. If you have your own garden with abundance of tomatoes, freeze them to can later. For example, frozen tomatoes are perfect for canning spaghetti sauce.
  • Zucchini and Other Squashes: Slice and blanch your vegetables.
  • Eggplants: Cook your eggplant first for the best results. You can simply blanch the eggplant. But their texture is better if cooked.

Quick Freezing Tips

Pinterest has all sorts of recipes for freezing vegetables. The site is a wonderful resource. But here is the basic terminology.

  • Blanching: This is a key step for most vegetables. Briefly boil your vegetables then place them in an ice bath. The process helps preserve the flavor.
  • Dry: To prevent ice crystals forming on your vegetables, dry well before freezing.
  • Flash Freeze: Spread your vegetables out on a tray then place them in your freezer. Flash freezing prevents clumping.
  • Proper Containers: Use freezer bags or containers to properly preserve your vegetables. Laying your freezer bags flat allows you to save space in your freezer. Remember to label your containers with dates.

Freezing vegetables is a great way to stock up for the winter months.

Rediscover Your Hometown: Local Adventure Ideas

July is almost over. Summer will slowly come to an end. Soon, school will start, schedules fill, and the weather grows colder. Time to get out and explore. You don’t need to travel a long distance to enjoy the last days of summer. Be a tourist in your hometown, which is a fun, budget-friendly way to rediscover the place you live! If you are searching for inspiration, check out the following tips and ideas to help you make the most of your local adventures.

Three swans swimming in a calm lake surrounded by greenery and lily pads.

Plan Like a Tourist

  • Research: Check your town’s tourism website or Chamber of Commerce. Next find local Facebook Events for hidden gems and upcoming activities.
  • Online Resources or Apps: Use TripAdvisor, Yelp, or Google to find different areas to visit. See what travelers recommend in your area.
  • Theme: Pick a theme for the day or week. For example, one day is for historical sites in your area. Your next one is all about nature or food. Then a week or another day focuses on art in your area.

Explore Like a Newcomer

  • Guided Tours: Take a guided tour of museums, historic homes, or breweries. If your town offers walking tours of historical sites or ghost tours, check out the schedules and go.
  • Visit Local Landmarks: Even if you’ve passed the landmarks or monuments a hundred times, go visit.
  • Geocaching: Go Geocaching or do a scavenger hunt in your city. Use the Geocache app or print lists of different items to find.

Enjoy the Outdoors

  • Parks: Check out all your local or state parks.
  • Hiking: Go for a hike on local trails. Many venues offer beginners hiking trails which are easy to navigate and perfect for families.
  • Picnic: If you visit parks or go hiking, bring a picnic. Enjoy a simple meal outdoors.
  • Water Fun: Research beaches, lakes or rivers in your area. Spend time learning kayaking or paddleboard. Try a different beach, lake, or river each week. Go tubing down a local river. Or simply spend a day at beach. Go swimming, build sandcastles, and relax.
  • Community Events: Look for free concerts, outdoor plays, theater productions, or movie nights in the park. Bring a blanket or chair and enjoy the evening.
  • Look for Art: Explore public art installations, murals, or sculptures.

Eat Like You’re on Vacation

  • New Places: Try a new restaurant or café. Look for food trucks at pop-up events.
  • Go to More Than One: Do a “progressive dinner” on your afternoon out. Try appetizers at one spot, entrees at another, and a dessert somewhere else.
  • Farmer’s Market: Visit your farmer’s market or roadside stand. Try cooking a “local only” meal from your purchases.

Document Your Adventure

  • Bring a Camera: Take lots of photos. Or create videos like a real tourist to upload on social media.
  • Scrapbook: Create a scrapbook, digital album, or Instagram story series documenting your hometown tourist picks.
  • Review: Write reviews of the different places you visit.
  • Create a Travel Journal: Bring a small notebook or use an app to take notes. Create an entry for each stop.

Remember have fun! Enjoy these last days of summer.

Tips for Getting a Guinea Pig as a Pet

Are you considering getting your child a pet? Is a Guinea Pig on top of your list? Getting your child a guinea pig can be a really sweet and rewarding experience. But like any pet, Guinea Pigs require daily attention and care.

A close-up of a guinea pig sitting on a person's lap, with greenery blurred in the background.

Basic Characteristics of Guinea Pigs

  • Easy Going: Guinea Pigs are gentle, social, and rarely bite.
  • Need More Than One: Guinea Pigs thrive better in pairs. They need interaction.
  • Life Span: Guinea Pigs live around 5–7 years. But sometimes have longer life spans.
  • Daily Care: Guinea Pigs require daily care. Contrary to belief, they are not a “low-maintenance” pet.
  • Routine: Guinea Pigs thrive on routine and attention.

Ask Yourself: Are you ready for a Guinea Pig as a Pet?

  • Age Appropriate: Is your child old enough to gently handle a Guinea Pig? Usually, the best time for your child to get a Guinea Pig is 6 years and up with supervision.
  • Future Plan: Are you willing to take over care if your child loses interest? Think ahead. Basically the Guinea Pig is a family pet.
  • Costs: Can you afford ongoing costs of getting a new pet. Consider the cost of food, bedding, and vet visits.

Minimum Habitat Set Up

  • Enclosure: Guinea Pigs need spage. A major part of your set up is a large cage. The cage must be bigger than pet store cages. Consider getting one think at least 7.5 sq ft for one, more space for two.
  • Bedding: Avoid cedar or pine bedding. Use soft bedding material like paper or fleece.
  • Hay Supply: An unlimited hay supply is essential. Guinea Pigs love hay. In fact, hay is their main food.
  • Vegetables: Guinea Pigs need fresh veggies daily.
  • Dishes: Guinea Pigs need water bottles and food dishes.
  • Places to Hide: Guinea Pigs like to feel safe. Proving hideouts is essential.

Daily Care Requirements

  • Refill Main Food Dish: Refill hay dish.
  • Water: Provide fresh water. Clean water bottle, if needed.
  • Vegetables: Cut and provide fresh veggies like romaine, bell peppers, and cucumbers.
  • Clean Area: If needed, spot clean the cage.
  • Playtime: Engage in gentle interaction time

Weekly Requirements

  • Clean Everything: Do a full cage clean. Check the hiding spots too.
  • Wash: Completely wash the food dishes and water bottle.
  • Health: Check your Guinea Pig’s nails and overall health.

Handling and Bonding Tips

  • Holding: When picking up your Guinea Pig, always use two hands and support their bottom.
  • Don’t Stand: Sit on the floor or couch while holding your Guinea Pig. You do not want your pet to fall.
  • Be Patient: Let your Guinea Pg come to you. Don’t chase. Sudden movements may scare your pet.
  • Build Trust: In the beginning, offer veggies by hand to build trust with your pet.

Guinea Pigs are amazing little pets. They are sweet, chatty, and full of personality. But they really thrive when the whole family is involved in their care and socialization.

  1. Backdrop

Start with setting up a backdrop. Expensive materials are not necessary. In fact many items are usually available at your local dollar store.

  • Tablecloths: Tape plastic tablecloths to a wall or hang on a rope. If available, hang three tablecloths- red, white, and blue.
  • Streamers: Use red, white, and blue streamers as a backdrop. Many streamers are metallic which adds a sparkle to the backdrop.
