  1. Stay Informed: Monitor weather forecasts and updates to stay aware of changing winter storm conditions. You can also download your local news station app. Use the information to purchase groceries and other supplies before the winter storm begins.
  2. Emergency Kit: Prepare a winter emergency kit with essentials like blankets, non-perishable food, water, a flashlight, and first aid supplies.
  3. Dress Warmly: If you need to go out, wear layered clothing, including a hat, gloves, and waterproof boots to stay warm and dry.
  4. Home Heating: Ensure heating systems are properly functioning. Use space heaters with caution to prevent fires. If you need a space heater, clear everything away from the area.
  5. Safe Travel: If driving, drive slowly and keep a safe distance from other vehicles. Before heading to your destination, put a blanket, boots, extra clothing, and other emergency supplies in your vehicle. Being overly prepared is always better than the alternative.
  6. Insulate Pipes: Protect pipes from freezing by insulating them and allowing faucets to drip during extreme cold.
  7. Power Outages: Have backup power sources like generators and know how to safely use them if the power goes out. If you do not have a generator, use battery-operated candles, flashlights, and other light sources. Dress warmly.
  8. Clear Walkways: Keep sidewalks and driveways clear of ice and snow to prevent slips and falls.
  9. Stay Indoors: During severe storms, consider staying indoors to avoid hazardous conditions.
  10. Check on Others: Look out for neighbors, especially those who may need assistance, such as the elderly or those with disabilities.

Stay safe, do not panic, and enjoy your winter day.
